The conference, entitled “Proposals for Democratic Change in Cuba” will take place on June 23-24, 2007 at Florida International University (FIU), in Miami, Florida, USA. The conference is being organized by the four representative organizations for Cuba in the Christian Democrat Organization of America (ODCA): the Christian Liberation Movement, the Cuban Democratic Project, the Christian Democratic Party of Cuba and the Cuban Democratic Directorate. The conference will evaluate ongoing efforts by all Cubans to promote dialogue, reconciliation and non-violent change as the basis for democratization in Cuba, as well as the role of the international community in these efforts. Two key components of democratization will be analyzed: proposals for civic participation, such as referendum projects, and national reconciliation initiatives. The panels will explore lessons learned from other countries that have successfully employed civic initiatives to push forward non-violent struggles. They will also consider a proposed referendum in Cuba known as the Varela Project. The panels on reconciliation will consider international examples as well as projects that have arisen inside Cuba. The conference will explore the role of the international community and the exile community in promoting solidarity with the people of Cuba, by formulating international campaigns and strategies for the liberation of the political prisoners and in favor of non-violent change towards democracy. This unique event will include the participation of opposition leaders and human rights activists inside Cuba as well as activists in exile and experts from countries around the world who will lend their comparative experiences. |
